New Births at the Borgo Segine Biopark: Welcome to the Two Little Crowned Cranes

Wonderful news is filling the Borgo Segine countryside in Melendugno with joy: our biopark family has expanded with the birth of two Crowned Crane chicks (Balearica pavonina).

The chicks are currently safe in our incubator, where they receive the full care and constant attention of our team to best navigate the delicate first stages of their lives. While we wait for them to grow and make their official debut among the estate's meadows, we'd like to share the story of these extraordinary birds and our farm's commitment to protecting Salento's biodiversity.

The Crowned Crane: Origins and Characteristics of the Royal Bird

The crowned crane is one of the most fascinating and majestic birds in the world. Native to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, this species is renowned for its most iconic aesthetic feature: an erect "crown" of stiff, golden feathers adorning its head, giving it a regal bearing.

In many African cultures, the crowned crane is considered a symbol of prosperity, grace, and fidelity. They are strictly monogamous, forming stable pairs for life and courting each other with hypnotic nuptial dances featuring leaps and flapping wings.

From Incubator to First Steps: How Chicks Grow

The hatching of the eggs was a deeply moving moment. At birth, the crowned crane chicks have soft, downy plumage with golden, camouflage-like hues, very different from their adult counterparts.

To ensure the survival and well-being of the fledglings, management during the first few days requires a rigorous protocol:

Controlled microclimate: The incubator maintains the ideal temperature and humidity to simulate the warmth of the mother's nest.

Targeted nutrition: The chicks' diet is rich in proteins and minerals essential for supporting the development of their long legs and skeleton.

Plumage development: Within a few weeks, the down will give way to permanent feathers, revealing the first signs of the future crown.

Visiting the Borgo Segine Biopark: A Family Experience in Salento

Hosting and encouraging the reproduction of protected or rare species is an integral part of Borgo Segine's philosophy. Our biopark is designed as an educational and immersive space where farm guests, families, and children can rediscover authentic contact with animals and respect for the surrounding environment.

If you're planning a vacation in Salento or a nature walk in Melendugno, we invite you to follow us on our social media channels to stay updated on the chicks' progress. They'll soon be ready to take their first steps outdoors!
